Y Morgrug

–CY

Nôl yn 2009 doedd ond un cwestiwn ar feddwl y genedl, a’r cwestiwn hwnnw oedd “Pwy Yw Y Morgrug?”

Wele 2010 yn gwawrio gyda’r ateb hir-ddisgwyliedig — ‘Ni Yw Y Morgrug’.

I’r rhai pedantig yn eich plith, Y Morgrug yw Mei, Osian, Rhun a Gruff. Ffrwydrodd y pedwarawd hwn ar y sîn a hwythau’n dal yn eu dyddiau ysgol gyda’r clasuron ‘1-2-3-4-5’ a ‘Motowei’, gan ddal sylw Huw Stephens. Fe’u gwahoddwyd i chwarae yng Ngŵyl Sŵn yn Hydref ’09 a dyma lle glywodd y byd sŵn unigryw Y Morgrug am y tro cyntaf.

Daliodd y band sylw Klep Dim Trep wrth i’w caneuon gael eu clywed yn gyson ar Radio Cymru a’u chwarae gan fandiau fel Eitha Tal Ffranco a Cate Le Bon. Rhyddhawyd yr EP ‘Ni Yw Y Morgrug’ ar y label yn 2010.

‘Ni Yw Y Morgrug’ oedd ymdrech gyntaf y band i gael ei rhyddhau i’r cyhoedd, ac mae’r teitl yn dweud y cyfan am gynnwys y record. Wedi ei recordio yn ystod eira mawr gwyliau ysgol ’09 yn stiwdio John Lawrence gynt o’r Gorkys, mae’r EP yn llwyddo i grynhoi steil a neges y band mewn i bum cân.

Gan gynnwys o bosib y gytgan fwyaf gafaelgar i gael ei sgwennu gan rhywun 12 oed, mae’r glasur hon yn dangos nad yw cymhlethdod cerddorol wastad yn cael y gorau.

Back in 2009 there was only one question on the mind of every Welsh man, woman and child. That question was “Who are Y Morgrug?”

Career through space and time to the heady days of summer 2010. The much-anticipated answer arrived in style — ‘We Are Y Morgrug’.

For the sake of pedantry, Y Morgrug are in fact Mei, Osian, Rhun and Gruff. The quartet exploded onto the scene while still in their school days with the instant classics ‘1-2-3-4-5’ and ‘Motowei’, catching the ear of Huw Stephens, who invited them to Cardiff and introduced the world to their unique sound at Sŵn Festival 2009.

The band also caught the attention of Klep Dim Trep as their songs were played on Radio Cymru and covered by bands such as Eitha Tal Ffranco and Cate Le Bon. The label released their debut EP ‘Ni Yw Y Morgug’ (We Are Y Morgrug) in 2010.

The title says it all about the EP’s content. Recorded during the blizzard of school holidays ’09 in John Lawrence’s studio, the EP condenses the band’s unique style and message into five songs.

Featuring possibly the catchiest chorus ever written by a 12-year-old, this gem proves that complexity only serves to dilute the impact.
Also useful as a reference for counting to 10 in Welsh and French.
